Issue 1 Resolution - Ohio Third Frontier
At the Executive Committee meeting on 3/16/2010, the Excellence in Government Panel presented a statement of support for Issue 1 - Renewal of the Third Frontier Program, an effort intended to attract new businesses and jobs into Ohio. The panel requested that the Cincinnatus Association endorse approval of this issue, which will be on the May 4th ballot. In this regard, the Executive Committee approved the presentation and discussion of a resolution for member vote at the meeting on 4/13/2010 for Association endorsement of the approval of Issue 1. Scheyer Endorses Open Letter on TNTP Report and Community Conversation
In 2009, Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS), the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers (CFT) and the Cincinnati Association of Administrators and Supervisors (CAASS) participated in a study by The New Teachers Project (TNTP) to explore policies and practices that prevent teachers from maximizing their impact on student learning. The results were reported in December 2009 - "Human Capital Reform in Cincinnati Public Schools: Strengthening Teacher Effectiveness and Support" <click title for Executive Summary and full text of that report>
At their meeting on 3/16, the Executive Committee authorized Association President Bill Scheyer to add his signature to an open letter from TNTP <click title to view that letter> urging, ". . . the entire community to support real change that will provide every child in our community access to a superior education." The letter also invites everyone to a Community Conversation on the report on April 8th.
Cincinnatus members are encouraged to read this interesting and valuable information, and to take an active roll in the quality of education in Greater Cincinnati. [Posted 3/21/2010]

Association Announces New Members for 2010
The Cincinnatus Association is pleased to announce the approval of 26 new members for 2010. This represents the largest new member class since 2006. Association President summarized his thoughts, "I'm excited to see that we have another outstanding group of new members. The diversity of background and experience in this year's group will provide additional energy as we begin to implement our strategic plan." [Posted 3/22/2010]

Building The Citizens' Budget
Over the past decade, Cincinnati's citizens have generally been limited to two minutes of back-end testimony in shaping the City's biennial budget. However, with huge deficits looming, the citizen voice will be essential to balancing the budget in a way our community can live with. Consequently, a diverse coalition of civic groups is partnering with the City Administration to bring deliberative citizen input to the beginning of the 2011-2012 biennial budget debate. <Click here to read more - look for "Building The Citizens' Budget"> [Posted 3/18/2010]

River-Based Environmental Education
P.A. DENNY RIVER EDUCATION CENTER - The P.A. Denny is a 3-deck sternwheeler that cruised West Virginia's Kanawha River for nearly three decades. It is now operated by the Foundation for Ohio River Education (FORE), a non-profit organization associated with the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), as a floating classroom designed to introduce 4th - 12th graders to science and ecology concepts. The P.A. Denny features labs and equipment for the students' use during 4-5 hour voyages. It will be docked behind the Newport Aquarium and will be staffed and available for tours before and after our dinner presentation.
DINE WITH THE FISHES - Our dinner will be an outstanding buffet served in the Currents Ballroom, a special event venue with spectacular river views of the Cincinnati skyline at dusk.
DINNER PRESENTATION - Alan Vicory (ORSANCO), Heather Mayfield (FORE) and Miriam Kannan (NKU) will focus on the unique partnership between NKU's Department of Biological Sciences and FORE that provides river-based environmental education opportunities aboard the P.A. Denny for local science classes, teachers and local residents.
