NEWS IN BRIEF
08/13/2008
Education Panel
The Panel at its July meeting agreed to collaborate with the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber's Agenda 360 initiative to aid in its long-term goal "Making our region the national model for 21st Century education." The rationale:
>> Education will change dramatically to prepare children for the 21st Century.
>> Our region has the leadership to lead to radical transformation.
>> Engaging core leaders will lay the foundation for change and drive innovation.
Community Inclusion
>> Brandon Wiers has been invited by City Manager Milton Dohoney to present the results of the Stable Integrated Communities Study to his department heads on August 5th which provides another opportunity for Cincinnatus to have an impact on local government efforts.
>> The Panel began discussions of its strategic direction and goals for the 2008-2009 including some interest in having a joint meeting with the Education Panel and plans to complete its goal work at our September regular meeting.
>> The Panel’s next meeting is Monday, September 8th at 11:30 at the Health Foundation and new or interested members are welcome to attend.
Excellence in Government Panel
>> The Panel has drafted a 2008-09 action plan that will help shape its goals and focus for the upcoming year.
>> The Panel is working with the Program Committee on securing Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher to address Cincinnatus at the October meeting.
>> After a comprehensive review, the Panel has provided detailed feedback to Cincinnati vice-mayor Crowley on his proposed Environmental Justice ordinance.
>> On the immediate radar screen are potential ballot issues for this fall. The Panel will be reviewing these issues and potentially bring a recommendation to the October meeting for endorsement or non-endorsement. The possible ballot issues are red light cameras, proportional representation voting in the City of Cincinnati, and mandated sick leave and pay day lending at the State of Ohio level.
